Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), Rivers State Administrator, officially inaugurated 23 newly elected Local Government Chairmen, shortly after they received their certificates of return from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The ceremony, marked by a group photograph, symbolized a fresh chapter for local governance in the state.
In his speech, Ibas emphasized the weight of public office, urging the chairmen to prioritize transparency, accountability, and reform.
“This victory is not a prize to be enjoyed. It is a burden to be carried,” he stated, calling for leadership rooted in selfless service rather than personal gain.
He encouraged the chairmen to move away from patronage politics and focus on delivering impactful services to enhance grassroots communities.
Reflecting on the peaceful August 30, 2025, local government elections, Ibas hailed the process as a triumph of democracy, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s March 18, 2025, state of emergency declaration.
“You proved that democracy belongs to the people,” he told the electorate, praising their commitment and discipline. He also lauded RSIEC for overseeing a transparent and orderly election.
Ibas outlined key priorities for the chairmen, urging them to study the Nigerian Constitution and local government statutes, which he described as their “compass of stewardship.”
He stressed collaboration with traditional rulers, security agencies, and community leaders to maintain peace, noting, “Without peace, there can be no progress.”
Additionally, he called for efforts to bolster local economies through support for small businesses, infrastructure development, and education, alongside cooperation with the ongoing biometric enrollment of local government staff for efficient planning and payroll management.
The Administrator also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing Council Administrators, commending their service during a pivotal time in Rivers State’s history.
