Nigerian troops have destroyed a Lakurawa terrorist hideout in Waria Forest, Sokoto State, after a fierce gun battle forced the fighters to abandon their camp and escape into the forest.
The operation was carried out on Wednesday, October 15, by troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, as part of efforts to dismantle terrorist camps across the North West.
The troops moved through Alela, Bilange and Kandam villages in Tangaza Local Government Area before advancing into Waria Forest, where they encountered the terrorists.
A heavy exchange of gunfire followed, but the troops’ superior firepower forced the Lakurawa fighters to retreat from their positions and flee deeper into the forest.
During the pursuit, some of the terrorists were neutralised, while the troops later destroyed the camps and structures used by the group as a base.
The operation also led to the recovery of weapons and five motorcycles belonging to the terrorists.
Although the destruction of the hideout disrupted the group’s activities in the area, security forces are now focused on preventing the fleeing fighters from regrouping in other locations.
The military said troops had continued clearance operations and maintained dominance in the area to protect residents and restrict the movement of terrorist groups.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA is part of ongoing military efforts to eliminate terrorist enclaves, deny armed groups safe havens and restore peace across the North West region.
