US President Donald Trump
United States (US) President Donald Trump has strongly criticized the Supreme Court of the United States after it struck down his global tariffs, accusing some justices of lacking patriotism and being influenced from abroad.
Speaking at a White House press conference on Friday, he said, “I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country.”
Trump went further, describing the justices as “very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution,” and at one point calling them “fools and lap dogs.”
The ruling marked his first major defeat before the conservative-leaning court, which had largely supported his policies since he returned to office.
Asked about his appointees Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, who voted against him, Trump said he did not “want to say whether or not I regret.” He added, “I think their decision was terrible,” and said it was “an embarrassment to their families.” The 6–3 ruling was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and three liberal justices.
The president praised those who sided with him — Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh — thanking them “for their strength and wisdom, and love of our country.”
He called Kavanaugh a “genius” and said he was “so proud of him,” noting the justice’s 63-page dissent.
Trump also alleged outside interference, saying, “It’s my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interests,” and adding, “They have a lot of influence over the Supreme Court.” When asked for proof, he replied, “You’re going to find out.” Vice President JD Vance supported the criticism, calling the ruling “lawlessness from the court, plain and simple.”
On invitations to the State of the Union, Trump said, “Three are happily invited,” while the others were “invited, barely,” adding, “I couldn’t care less if they come.”
