US President Donald Trump has become the first sitting or living American president in more than a century to be featured on an official US coin after the United States Mint unveiled a commemorative $1 piece marking the country’s 250th anniversary.
The newly released coin bears Trump’s portrait alongside the inscriptions “Liberty” and “In God We Trust.” It was introduced as part of the celebrations for America’s semiquincentennial.
Although the coin carries a face value of one dollar and qualifies as legal tender, the US Mint said it is not intended for general circulation.
Ordinarily, US law bars the image of a living president from appearing on American currency. However, officials relied on a special design provision contained in legislation authorising the 250th anniversary commemorative programme to permit the release.
Collectors quickly snapped up the new coins after they became available for purchase. Rolls of 25 coins were offered at $61, while bags containing 100 coins sold for $154.50.
Within hours of the launch, the US Mint’s online store listed the commemorative coins as “not currently in stock,” reflecting strong demand from buyers.
The coins were also made available through vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, D.C., where collectors and visitors could purchase them directly.
The release marks another high-profile addition to Trump’s influence on national symbols as commemorative activities for the United States’ 250th anniversary continue.
