PDP leaders during a meeting in Abuja
Prominent leaders from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, have called on Nigerians to join forces in defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2027 elections.
.
The call was made after a closed-door meeting in Abuja, where the leaders discussed the state of the PDP and the country.
The PDP leaders emphasized the need for a broad coalition committed to national unity, democratic principles, security, economic recovery, and a strong fight against corruption.
“We call on all PDP members and Nigerians to come together in a broad coalition… to develop strategies that reflect both national and local political realities, in preparation for future elections,” the communiqué read.
The leaders expressed deep concern over the PDP’s decline since its loss in the 2023 presidential election, citing internal divisions and a failure to follow the party’s constitution.
They also accused the APC-led Federal Government of undermining democracy by using state institutions to weaken the opposition.
The meeting ended with a call for urgent action to rebuild the PDP and work toward restoring stability, credibility, and effective leadership in Nigeria
Other notable PDP leaders who attended the meeting include former governors Sule Lamido, Uche Secondus, Babangida Aliyu, Sam Egwu, Aminu Tambuwal, and Liyel Imoke.
This development adds to the growing number of times opposition leaders and politicians have met to strategize ahead of the 2027 general elections. Key figures such as Peter Obi of the Labour Party, ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi are part of the group spearheading the coalition talks.
