Zamfara State has been plagued by recurring violent attacks, kidnappings, and killings, often attributed to armed bandits, leaving residents in a state of fear and insecurity.
A tragic mining accident has rocked Zamfara State, as a pit collapse at the Kadauri mining site in Maru Local Government Area is feared to have claimed numerous lives.
The collapse occurred on Thursday while a group of artisanal miners was working deep underground.
Community sources revealed to Channels Television that at least 13 bodies have been pulled from the rubble so far, with an unknown number of miners still trapped beneath the debris.
While the full scale of the disaster remains uncertain, rescue efforts are said to be ongoing, with fears that the death toll could rise.
Nasiru Bamanga, the Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Solid Minerals Development Agency, confirmed that he had received early reports about the incident but was still awaiting a comprehensive briefing.
> “I heard about the incident, and I’m yet to get full details. I will be going there later today and, Insha Allah, I will give you full information when I return,” Bamanga told reporters.
The remote mining site is known for attracting large numbers of artisanal miners seeking gold and other minerals, often working under dangerous, unregulated conditions.
Authorities and emergency responders are expected to provide further updates as search and recovery operations continue.
