Leo Messi is back in the Ballon d’Or conversation.
The former Argentina captain, who recently retired from international football, has been nominated again at 39. It is exactly 20 years since his first nod in 2006.
The list was announced by Fabrizio Romano on social media, with a photo of Messi standing behind his 8 Ballon d’Or trophies. The caption read “20 YEARS”.
This is now a record 17th nomination for Messi. No player has been named more times. His run from 2006 to 2026 is also the longest span in the award’s history.
He won his first Ballon d’Or in 2009 and his eighth in 2023 after leading Argentina to World Cup glory.
“Exactly 20 years later, another nomination at 39 years old,” the post said. “Leo Messi, back on Ballon d’Or stage… where he belongs.”
The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026 in London.
Two decades after he first appeared, Messi remains in the frame for a 9th award.
