Juju music legend, King Sunny Ade
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated legendary juju musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday, describing him as one of Nigeria’s greatest cultural ambassadors whose music has projected the country’s rich heritage to the world.
In a goodwill message released on Tuesday, the President praised the music icon for spending eight decades promoting Nigerian culture through his talent, creativity and dedication to the arts.
Tinubu said King Sunny Ade’s achievements have inspired generations of musicians and helped establish juju music as one of Nigeria’s most recognised cultural exports.
The President said the veteran entertainer’s unique style, which combines the guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments with energetic dance performances, has earned him a permanent place in the history of African music.
“Today, I warmly celebrate Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, the legendary King Sunny Ade and an icon of Nigerian and African music, on his 80th birthday.”
He added: “For eight decades, you have exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship, enriching our nation and bringing joy to millions across generations. Through your extraordinary talent, creativity, discipline and enduring passion, you transformed juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.”
The President also commended King Sunny Ade for proudly representing Nigeria on the international stage.
“As one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainers, you have brought the richness of our culture to audiences worldwide. Your distinctive sound, masterful blend of guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments, mesmerising dance steps, and innovative approach to music have earned you a distinguished place in the history of African arts and entertainment.”
According to Tinubu, the music legend has shown that Nigeria’s cultural heritage can connect with people across the world.
“Beyond your musical accomplishments, you have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria, demonstrating through your career that our cultural heritage can transcend borders and speak powerfully to people everywhere.”
The President further noted that King Sunny Ade’s songs have done more than entertain audiences, saying they have preserved Nigerian traditions and strengthened the country’s cultural identity.
“Your remarkable contributions to the Nigerian creative industry have inspired generations of musicians and practitioners. Your music has not only entertained, but it has also preserved our cultural identity, celebrated our traditions and projected the beauty and diversity of our country to the world.”
King Sunny Ade is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential musicians. Rising to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, he popularised juju music beyond Nigeria and became one of the first Nigerian artistes to achieve global recognition. His recordings, international tours and collaborations introduced audiences around the world to the richness of Nigerian traditional music, earning him numerous honours and lifetime achievement awards.
Tinubu said the Federal Government values the contributions of cultural icons whose works continue to promote Nigeria’s image and inspire younger generations.
“As President, I deeply recognise and celebrate the immense contributions of our cultural icons. On this important milestone, I am especially grateful to God for the grace He has given you.”
The President described the veteran musician as a symbol of excellence, perseverance and commitment to Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
“At 80, you embody excellence, perseverance and service to the arts. Your achievements remind us that talent, when combined with dedication and commitment to one’s heritage, can become an enduring national legacy.”
Tinubu concluded by congratulating the music legend on behalf of his family, the Federal Government and Nigerians.
“On behalf of my family, the government and the people of Nigeria, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. May Almighty God bless you with good health, wisdom and many more fulfilling years.”
