Three sailors who had been kidnapped by jihadists have killed their abductors and escaped, Carta de Mozambique newspaper reports.
The jihadists had invaded an island located near Macomia district and held hostage a group of displaced people, fishermen and three sailors, who were waiting for rescue to the city of Pemba.
Four of the kidnappers boarded a boat with some of the victims including the sailors and were heading for Mocímboa da Praia district.
The sailors pushed the jihadists into the sea and escaped after having sailed to the island of Matemo, the newspaper quotes unnamed sources as saying.
Many abductions take place in the islands where people wait for rescue opportunities to sail to Pemba.
