Thousands demonstrate across Israel for deal to release hostages
Thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv and other cities on Saturday, demanding their government secure the release of hostages still held captive in Gaza.
Eli Sharabi, a former hostage who spent 16 months in captivity after the October 7, 2023 attacks, addressed the rally in Tel Aviv.
“The window to bring home all 50 hostages is open now, and it won’t stay open for long,” Sharabi urged, emphasizing the need for swift action.
His personal tragedy adds depth to his plea; Sharabi lost his wife and two young daughters in the attacks, and his brother’s body remains in Gaza.
“You were elected to serve the people with humility and modesty,” Sharabi told the government.
“Arrogance brought us disaster, and we must not repeat the same mistakes.”
With indirect talks between Israel and Hamas stalled in Doha, Qatar, protesters are growing impatient. The talks aim for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of some hostages.
Critics accuse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of delaying the process for political gain. The protests underscore the urgency felt by families and supporters of the hostages, with at least 20 of the 50 believed to still be alive.
