Plateau State is notorious for violent attacks by bandits and armed militia
Plateau State Government has imposed a 12-hour dusk-to-dawn curfew on Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas with immediate effect, citing emerging security threats in the areas.
The curfew, which commenced on Monday, September 21, will restrict movement between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily until further notice.
Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, mni, announced the directive in a statement issued on Monday.
The government said the measure was aimed at maintaining public order, allowing security agencies to stabilise the affected areas, protecting lives and preventing a breakdown of law and order.
It directed residents of the three local government areas to comply with the restriction and plan their commercial, agricultural and personal activities around the curfew hours.
“Security operatives have been directed to strictly enforce the curfew,” the statement said.
The government also announced an immediate ban on the use of motorcycles throughout the affected jurisdictions, but did not state whether the restriction would apply only during the curfew hours or throughout the day.
It assured law-abiding residents that security personnel deployed to enforce the directives would operate with professionalism.
The government urged residents to comply with the measures in the interest of public safety.
Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu local government areas have experienced recurring security challenges over the years, with attacks, reprisals and communal clashes leading to loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of residents. The areas have remained flashpoints despite repeated security operations by the military and other agencies. The latest restrictions come amid renewed concerns over security developments, as the state government seeks to prevent further violence and restore normalcy.
