United States (US) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has warned lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) that having a past criminal record can lead to revocation of their status and removal from the US.
In a notice to Green Card holders, the agency emphasized that possessing a Green Card is a privilege, not a right.
Criminal history not tolerated
The CBP stated, “Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident.”

The agency stressed that the government reserves the right to revoke a Green Card if the holder has a past criminal record.
“Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused,” the notice read.
Mandatory detention possible
The CBP also warned that lawful permanent residents presenting at a US port of entry with previous criminal convictions may be subject to mandatory detention.
“In addition to immigration removal proceedings, lawful permanent residents presenting at a U.S. port of entry with previous criminal convictions may be subject to mandatory detention,” the agency stated.
The CBP emphasized its role in protecting the American people, safeguarding borders, and enhancing national economic security.
“We pride ourselves for protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders and enhancing the nation’s economic security,” the agency said.
