Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Zaria, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Workbridge Empowerment Foundation to train, certify and create employment opportunities for women as professional drivers across Nigeria.
The agreement was signed on Monday at the institute’s headquarters under the Women Drive Nigeria Initiative (WDNI), with more than 100 women already enrolled for the pilot phase.
Under the partnership, NITT will provide professional driver training and certification, while the Workbridge Empowerment Foundation will recruit participants for the programme.
Speaking at the ceremony, NITT Director-General and Chief Executive, Dr. Bayero Salih Farah, described the collaboration as a major step toward increasing women’s participation in the transport sector.
Dr. Farah said the initiative would equip women with professional driving skills while opening up sustainable employment opportunities for them.
He noted that the role of a professional driver goes beyond operating a vehicle, stressing that drivers should also have the knowledge and competence to effectively manage road incidents.
The MoU was signed by the Foundation’s Team Leader, Mr. Abdullahi Umar, while Dr. Farah signed on behalf of NITT with the support of the institute’s Registrar, Dr. Maina W. A. Tarfa.
Director of the Transport Technology Centre, Dr. Joshua Odeleye, delivered the opening remarks, while other senior officials, including Dr. Baba Ibrahim Mundi and Barr. Davies Job, attended the event.
The partnership reflects NITT’s continued commitment to producing a skilled, safety-conscious driving workforce through quality training, certification and capacity-building programmes.
