Following the abduction and subsequent rescue of 4 students of Plateau State University Bokkos, the management has taken deliberate steps to enhance adequate security of its students.
Majority of students of the university resides off-campus due to inadequate hostels accommodation.
The Management summoned an emergency security meeting soon after the recent attack on the students.
In attendance in the security meeting held at the Senate Chamber of the university includes: The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Yohana Daniel Izam and the new STF commander in Bokkos, Major T.T.Kaave, the Nigerian Police Force, the university security, Dean of Students Affairs and local vigilante groups in Bokkos LGA.
In a statement issued after the security meeting by the Public Relation Officer, John Agams indicated that the management is seriously concerned with the safety of its students and would go any length to protect them.
Part of the statement said: “The Vice Chancellor, Professor Izam said as custodians of the students, the University feels deeply grieved over the attack on its students”.
“Such incidence was not only capable of inflicting traumatic disorders and toxic stress among staff and students, but also inimical to the progress of academic activities which just resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent strike embarked upon by staff of the University”.
“He noted that the problem of insecurity Nationwide has become a cankerworm and a recurring decimal orchestrated by faceless enemies of the society who seemed bent on undermining the educational system in the country”.
“While the attack is being investigated by security agencies with a view to apprehending the perpetrators, management has put up security measures to prevent a repeat of such attacks”
“Management will not disclose its core security measures to the public, but we must let the students know that management will provide some social amenities like water and electricity to reduce their vulnerability to threats”.
“The Vice Chancellor pledged in the next two weeks to install a 33kv transformer off Campus while strategic water intervention will be undertaken off campus through the provision of two boreholes in Ndar and Diram off campus communities”.
The VC however warned the students against strolling out at odd hours and urged them to prioritise their personal security and safety.
The Vice Chancellor thanked the Visitor of the University for immediately directing the take off of a police outpost near the university.
He equally , appreciated the Chairman of Bokkos LGA who promised to shoulder the responsibility of providing poles for the electrification of some parts of the University host Community.
The meeting ended with prayers for the University and peaceful repose of the soul of late Emmanuel Israel.
