Dr Ejike Oji, Chairman, Technical Management Committee, Association for the Advancement of Family Planning in Nigeria (AAFP) has said that contraceptives are vital in engendering safe and planned births.
Dr. Oji said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, on the occasion of the commemoration of the World Contraception day.
The World Contraception Day is marked on September 26 every year, to recognise the importance of family planning in the lives of people all over the world.
The day was established with the goal of increasing contraceptive knowledge and empowering young people to make educated decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
Dr. Orji said that contraceptives are essential family planning commodities that foster the Sexual Reproductive and Health Rights of women.
“The yearly global campaign is centred on a vision in which every conception is wanted.
“World Contraception Day was established in 2007 by 10 international family planning organisations. It guarantees right of a woman to get pregnant when she wants,” he said.
Oji, who blamed maternal mortality and unsafe abortions on the lack of access to family planning commodities, called for government’s and stakeholders’ commitment to family planning.
According to him, “all is set for family planning 2030 and we are urging not only government’s commitment but civil Societies and other actors to its realisation.”
The Medical Practitioner said that the advanced technologies have increased individuals’ capacity to make choices for their own sexual and reproductive health for planned and safe child births.
