Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on Monday commiserated with flood victims in Silame, Tambuwal and Kebbe local government areas, assuring for immediate release of support package to the victims.
According to a statement to NATIONAL ACCORD, the governor said his led administration has resolved to construct three Earth Dams one in each of the three LGAs in addition to the one being constructed in Rabah LGA.
“To mitigate the loses incurred in the flood ravaged areas we are coming up with a special irrigation scheme for this year’s dry season farming” the governor said.
While commending the federal government for sending a team of personnels from NEMA to assess the situation in the state, the governor reiterated called for the federal government to direct federal ministry of water resources to immediately embarked on desilting of Bakalori and Goronyo Dams to restore their capacity so as reduce the risk of future reoccurrence .
Governor Tambuwal, who was in company of his deputy, some members of the state executive council and officials of the state ministry of agriculture and that of water resources, directed for the immediate commencement of assessment to ascertain the needed assistance for the victims
He said food and clothes would be given to them to cushion their suffering.
At Margai bridge the governor was briefed by the sole administrator Lawali Marafa Fakku who said the flood cut off Kebbe from the rest of state by affecting both Margai and Fakku Bridges.
At Romon sarki bridge, the governor was told by the sole administrator Abdullahi Umar that many communities lost their houses while farmlands were submerged thereby destroying crops worth millions of naira.
The governor, who was earlier at silame bridge to see for himself the extent of damage on the road linking Silame town and Gande, was informed by the sole administrator of the area Bello Muhammad Gumki that the flood affected about fifty six of about ninety communities of the area.
In his remarks the leader of the NEMA Team Engineer James commended Governor Tambuwal for his commitment to the wellbeing of his people.
Engineer James promised to work with the state government to ensure adequate interventions in all flood affected areas reduce the effects of the disaster.
