FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, speaking during the University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT’s) 35th Combined Convocation and 50th Anniversary celebration.
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike revealed plans to rally support from his network to fund the construction of a modern Senate Building for the institution.
Wike stated this during the University of Port Harcourt’s (UNIPORT) 35th Combined Convocation and 50th Anniversary celebration on Saturday.
Speaking at the event in Port Harcourt, Wike, one of four honorary doctorate recipients, also announced the establishment of two endowed chairs: one in Family and Child’s Law at the Faculty of Law in honor of his wife, and another in Leadership and Public Administration in the Department of Political Science in his own name.
Wike shared that UNIPORT recently approached him, in his capacity as FCT Minister, to secure land in Abuja for a Centre for Leadership and Democratic Studies.
“I presented the request to President Bola Tinubu, who promptly approved it.
The Certificate of Occupancy for the land is now ready to be handed over to the university,” he stated.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Wike credited UNIPORT for providing a robust intellectual foundation and fostering values of research, integrity, and boldness.
He called on alumni and Nigerians to back President Tinubu’s initiatives, particularly the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, aimed at enhancing socio-economic welfare and ensuring access to quality education for all, regardless of financial constraints.
The event also featured the inauguration of UNIPORT’s new Convocation Arena by Rivers State’s Sole Administrator, retired Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas.
Wike was honored with a Doctor of Science degree in Political Science (D.Sc. Honoris Causa) for his significant contributions to the university’s growth. Other recipients of honorary degrees included First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and Aminu Masari, Chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s Board of Trustees.
